How I Do Daffodils

How I do Daffodils. You always hear and read that Daffs need to be planted in the fall. My way is somewhat different. I dig and divide mine in the spring, for several reasons. I can tell the clumps that need to be split up, what variety they are, and since there are hundreds of thousands of other bulbs and plants growing here, I know where to replant them without digging up something else. Shown here are four smaller clumps I dug today. Daffs can become overcrowded after several years, which results in fewer blooms. These clumps weren't really crowded but were a variety I wanted in more places. In four or five years, the four original bulbs yielded over 60 bubs to replant. I separate the clumps, cut off the flowers for a nice bouquet, and replant each bulb separately, leaving the tops on the bulbs. Most of these will bloom again next year. The tool you see in the pics was made by my dad many years ago to dig ginseng. One or two whacks in the ground gives me the perfect size and depth hole for a bulb...about 6". I can plant 100 bulbs in about 15 minutes this way. So, don't be afraid to split your spring flowering bulbs in the spring. They'll love you for it! I've been doing it this way for many years and the results don't lie!....Garden On!
